Formula One Racing in Courtown

COURTOWN SAILING CLUB hosted a Formula One home international, a three day competition between twelve Hunter Formula One Yachts, comprising five entrants from the U.K., one from Arklow and six from Courtown.

Friday's opening day saw light winds and local boat J Ni Mac (Bob Sheriff) coming out in top in both races. Saturday, with five races scheduled, yielded fine sunshine and a rising breeze, which opened out the field. Sunday's forcast threatened gales, which duly carried midway through the first of two scheduled races. While exciting downwind spinnaker legs ensued, the final race was cancelled.

The English entrant Kingfisher (Chris Wright) claimed the trophy, closely followed by local boats Jou Jou (Dermot O'Morchue) and Typhoon (John Walsh) at the awards ceremony held on Sunday afternoon in the Bayview Hotel.
