C.S.C.
Racing Committee
Ideas Session with Skippers & Crews
28.11.2005
C.S.C. Racing Officer Bob Sheriff and his racing
committee invited skippers and crews to attend a meeting on
Friday 18th Nov. to discuss ways in which Cruiser racing in
C.S.C. and the Cruiser racing calendar could be made more interesting
or improved upon. The meeting was well attended with representation
from skippers and crewmembers of both classes. Many different
ideas were discussed and some very positive suggestions were
made a summary of which are set out below.
An attempt could be made to run two races on one Saturday
of every month. O.O.D.’s for these days should receive
points equalling the average of their last three races for
one of the races that they miss that day.
A committee boat could be used once a month so that O.O.D.’s
can start races from different start lines.
More start marks could be put out so that O.O.D.’s
have different start options.
Courses could be tightened up so that boats finish closer
together.
The possibility could be looked at that C1 boats could
race to different marks to C2 boats.
A Mini Regatta could be scheduled over a bank holiday
weekend. This could possibly be done in conjunction with
Arklow S.C. with racing being held off Courtown on one day
and off Arklow on the other.
Flags could be changed on race marks to make them more
visible. Florescent flags could be used.
A Mussel harvest should be done twice during the season
so that marks remain afloat. Volunteers will be needed.
Class captains or class representatives should be used
to help O.O.D.’s when necessary with decision-making.
The two classes to elect class captains in due course
It was suggested that the I.S.A. should be contacted regarding
their provision (or lack of provision) of handicap information.
After some discussion it was decided to follow the route
mentioned below
Skippers should be given the opportunity to race under
I.R.C. rules & therefore provision could be made for
this, including running races under both I.R.C. & Echo
rules and accommodating skippers in obtaining an I.R.C.
Handicap. Any such boats keen to race in both IRC and Echo
would need at least an unendorsed IRC handicap rating. This
would include getting the boat weighed among other details.
This would be best done at lift in. There are strict guidelines
regarding what can or cannot be left on board. These rules
will be sourced by the race Committee and communicated to
all interested. Normally the cost is about €40/50 per
boat
There are a number of boats that are registered to race
but do not. This has a bearing on points accumulated during
the league therefore it was decided that boats that do not
race on a given day should receive a points score of the
no. of boats that raced on that day + 1/3 the racing fleet
of that class. (In the past the score was the fleet + one).
Thought should be given to changing prizes being given
out for league races. Some people have too many glasses.
A helmsman championship was proposed by Martin Mahon
and very well received by all. Martin will tidy the details
up and it will be put into the calendar space and dates
permitting
A night race was suggested.
A junior helmsman race was suggested ( helm under 18
)
These ideas will now be considered further by the race committee
and it will be decided as to how they can be best implemented
or refined so that they can made practice.
