Safety

Safety at Sea

The sea - an ever changing force.

As a Club, we have always had a very positive and proactive attitude towards safety at sea; over ten years ago the Club brought the "Lifejacket rule" into our Sailing Instructions.

Out at Sea On a yearly basis a "Man Over Board" drill is run in conjunction with the local RNLI team, who provide the necessary equipment and pointers on what to do.

In the coming year we are introducing a "Safety Weekend" where safety lectures and demonstrations will be held for all members.

At different stages throughout the season "Safety Checks" are performed on Club Boats to ensure that they are sea worthy. It is also recommended to Boat Owners that the RNLI "Sea Check" is carried out on each boat.

To emphasise safety at sea from an early stage we also target our Dinghy section, training and retraining powerboat drivers in order to have a large panel of qualified people to call on. The Dinghys that take part in Club racing receive a spot check to ensure that the necessary equipment is carried on board.

The Club has a strong working relationship with the local RNLI team and recommend a visit to the RNLI home page.

RNLI Sea Safety Check

Last year the RNLI set up a FREE Sea Safety Check for all boat owners. The sea check lasts about 30 minutes and involves the RNLI adviser inspecting your boat, to make sure you're carrying the proper safety equipment. The committee strongly recommends that all boat owners avail of this FREE service. To coincide with the lift in, the local RNLI Sea Checkers have agreed to keep from Sat 6th April to Sun 28th April free, for the inspection of the Courtown boats. If interested you can contact the Courtown Sea Checkers via the RNLI website.

First Aid Course

CSC is hosting a one day First Aid course in April 2002. The course has been developed by the RYA especially for small leisure and commercial craft users. It satisfies the First Aid requirements of the ISA and RYA for their YachtMaster training scheme, safety boat coxn's and practical instructors at all levels. The course covers basic Frist Aid techniques with a heavy emphasis on hypothermia, cold water casualty management, artificial resuscitation, sea sickness and evacuation procedures at sea. This course is recognised by the ISA and RYA and is valid for three years. If you are interested please contact us.

Tides

Tidal heights for Courtown are based on the times of HW and LW Dover and, because of the influence of unique local conditions, should be regarded as approximate times only.
