The Pink Ribbon Challenge

Courtown Sailing Club were very proud to host the first pink ribbon sailing challenge in aid of The Irish Cancer Society. This event took place in the sun shine of courtown harbor last Saturday 3rd June with 24 boats from 3 different clubs taking part having crews from between 3 to 16.

With the emphasis being placed on fun the ultimate winner was the Irish Cancer Society when the target of €1000 was smashed 5 times over. With still more money to come in the total now stands at €5000.

The event was open to boats with lady skippers or skippers dressed in pink dresses. Most crews came dressed in pink with many being in drag.

The Start was signaled with the release of balloons from the end of the south pier. With a changeable westerly wind that gusted died away and gusted up again and a flat sea, it made for some pretty exciting and close sailing. The fleet was split into two classes but both the Round Ireland veterans and smaller boats sailed around the same triangular course and were reluctant to compromise even an inch for best position rounding each mark. Sailors and friends were invited back to the club boat yard for a Barbeque later were they were also served with strawberries and cream and presented with many prizes from the very many kind sponsors.

The event this year was run in conjunction with the clubs own Lady Skippers Race (results of which will be presented at the annual dinner dance) but it is hoped that it may become an annual charity event or may even be shared between other neighboring clubs and so grow even bigger and better.

Courtown Sailing Club would like to thank all those who took part, those who sponsored their boats and crews, the boats and crews who traveled from Arklow Sailing Club, to Mark Walters, the Bayview Hotel who without their support this event could not have taken place and to the very many sponsors of prizes, food etc. who are too many to mention but know who they are, finally those who gave extremely generously of their time in the organization of the event. Thank You!
