Southern’s 2004
The last weekend in June, Wexford Harbour Boat Club hosted the Mirror Southern’s 2004. There were about 60 boats competing. They were divided into 3 fleets, bronze, silver and gold. In the bronze fleet, you had the likes of us (Simon and Philip Doran), in the silver fleet you had those who were better than the likes of us! And in the Gold fleet let’s just say we have a long way to go!!!! Some of the sailors helming in the Gold fleet were on the Irish youth team. It was great to see 18/19 year olds still sailing mirrors; the standard was very high. Despite the wind (strong gales, no let me rephrase that very strong gales!!!) that almost capsized us on every beat, it was a very enjoyable experience. Erm how can I put it? Our mast fell down, we got swamped with water, we nearly sank, and we got towed in twice. We also got tied up to a boat which carried a portable loo,!!!! for two and a half hours, but other then that we had great fun, we sailed under Wexford bridge, we got to see the standard of the other boats and we saw some plastic mirrors. It was our first away regatta, we look forward to more, lets hope our mast stays upright next time and if you see some chicken rolls floating around Wexford harbour, they’re ours!!!!
